Daylight Saving Time Reminds Us About Our Sleep

Time to “Spring Ahead”! It is that time of the year when Daylight Saving Time (DST) brings our sleep patterns to the forefront of our consciousness.  The clock is moved ahead by one hour which means all of us will be losing one full hour of sleep.

This spring ritual can cause serious disruptions in sleep, leaving many scrambling to catch up on sleep they lost during their hectic work week. We need to change our lifestyle by taking steps to minimize sleep loss and fully regain the refreshed and alert feeling we so desperately need.

By making a few simple lifestyle changes, these tips can help you transition into healthy sleep pattern post Daylight Saving Time:
  • Reset all your clocks on the Saturday before the switch.
  • Computers, Blackberries and iPhones will automatically adjust to daylight-saving time.
  • Get a full night's sleep during the switch.
  • Maintain your regular sleep schedule during the entire weekend.
  • Exercise during the day for at least 30 minutes. Walk, run, or participate in yoga.
  • Resist the temptation to catch a nap in the middle of the day.
  • Avoid sugary foods, eat a well balanced meal with lots of vegetables.
  • Make sure you stay well hydrated, make water your choice of beverage.
